What does “Limited Edition Original Print” mean?

An original print is made when the artist creates a new piece of work by working with printmaking media, in this case Epson Ultrachrome or similar. Unlike a reproduction, where an original painting is photographed and then mechanically printed en-mass, New Odyssey Art prints do not exist as “physical” artifacts until they are printed as they are created on an Apple Macintosh computer and therefore exist only digitally untill printed. The prints are then strictly limited to a specified number - usually 75. Each print is made to order and so “original” in the sense that none of the prints of the same edition will ever be exactly similar. They are then signed and numbered and issued with a certificate of authenticity bearing a unique identification number a copy of which is held by New Odyssey Art.

What is a “Giclee” print?

From the French for "to spray or squirt," giclée is the term commonly used for what is currently the most advanced digital fine art printmaking technology. From high resolution digital images created on computer and printed with archival quality inks onto various surfaces. The giclée printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.

How stable are Giclee prints?

Giclee (“zhee-clay”) prints are printed on acid free watercolor paper with archival inks. Life-span estimates of Giclee's by third-party testing indicate over 75 years with no noticeable fade. When museum quality lighting is used, this time span increases to 175 years+, this is more than most original watercolours. We recommend that customers treat their Giclee prints in the same way as they would any original artwork. Reasonable care should be taken to avoid exposure to direct sunlight, excessive heat, or damp.

What is the difference between Posters and Prints?

The prints are all limited editions, the posters are open editions. The Limited Edition Prints are all printed on Hahnemülle German Etching 310gsm digital fine art paper. The size various from artwork to artwork. The posters are all printed on 160gsm Semi-matt A2 (594mm x 420mm) paper. The posters all have an area of white around the main image with a title and other details relating to New Odyssey Art including the logo and a printed signature. The image that appears in the posters is often substantially smaller than its Limited Edtion Print Equivalent.

Why do the Print prices vary?

This is because of the varying sizes of each print. Larger prints cost more to produce and this is reflected in the final price.

Why use Hahnemühle German Etching paper?

Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm paper is specialy prepare for digiatl reproduction using the Giclee process. It is a heavyweight stock with a slightly raised surafce texture. It is similar in feel and appearance to watercolour board. It gives a highly defined image and depth of colour with a matt finish.
